Should Your Cleanser Foam?

Straight up, skin care expert Caroline Hirons says no. "As a rule - stay clear of 'foaming' on the bottle (there is the odd exception, but they are few and far between) - to get foam you need to use a surfactant - and a surfactant turns your skin alkaline. Alkaline skin is like a petri dish for bacteria. The irony being that so many cleansers pushed on to acne/combination skins are foaming. Naughty, nasty companies should know better". And again, "In general, foaming is what you want Fairy Liquid to do. Not your cleanser. And to the brands: I am unapologetic".

She's the boss so I defer to her.

Before I knew all o dat I raved about the Cetaphil DermaControl Oil Control Foam Wash.

posted on our Facebook page January 28, 2013
"REVIEW: Often I felt like regular Cetaphil doesn't really cleanse my skin; and while it's famous for being gentle it still contains parabens.
This formula however does cleanse and the zinc ingredients do assist with oil control without over-drying.
I do NOT understand why it's damn near $50 though.

Whatta thumbnail!

Mandy commented on that video with a better recommendation. Thanks luv!

Since then, I have tried other foam cleansers. Why? I already had them and wasn't just going to throw my money away. I am happy to report, these ones don't give the skin that "tightening" effect.

The Body Shop Nutriganics Foaming Facial Wash and L'Occitane Immortelle Brightening Cleansing Foam

Nutriganics Foaming Facial Wash ingredients: Aqua/Water, Sucrose*, Glycerin, Propanediol, Coco-Betaine, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Coco-Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-4 Caprate, Sodium Chloride, Sucrose Laurate, Sodium Benzoate, Salicylic Acid, Fragrance, Linalool, Citronellol, Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil*, Buddleja Davidii Extract*, Thymus Vulgaris Extract/Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract*, Malva Sylvestris Flower Extract/Malva Sylvestris (Mallow) Flower Extract*, Arginine, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate.
*ingredient from organic farming.

The L'Occitane cleanser seems to have since been renamed 'Immortelle Precious Cleansing Foam' and the ingredients are: Water**, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate**, Glycerin**, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate**, Decyl Glucoside**, PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides**, Cocamidopropyl Betaine**, Gentiana Lutea Root Extract**, Helichrysum Italicum Extract**, Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract**, Citrus Unshiu Peel Extract**,Carum Petroselinum (Parsley) Extract**, Fragaria Chiloensis (Strawberry) Fruit Juice**, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract**, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Fruit Extract**, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate**, Butylene Glycol, Glyceryl Laurate**, Citric Acid**, Fragrance, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride**, Ethylhexylglycerin, PPG-26,Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil**, Potassium Sorbate, Hexyl Cinnamal. **Natural Origin Ingredients.

Some ingredients have been switched around, fragrance has been moved up :(, but it's basically the same product.

Both of these products were between $30 - $36 from Cave Shepherd. The L'Occitane was actually on sale because Cave Shepherd is discontinuing the line. I enjoyed both of these down to the last drop. The packaging is also much better than the Cetaphil one - after a while the pump on the Cetaphil cleanser became very stiff and weird.

For some odd reason, I prefer to have every type of cleanser in rotation at any given time; i.e. a foaming one, a cream one (errrr not so much), a liquid one and a physical exfoliator. Of those types I have found my Holy Grail scrub but I'm still looking for the best of the best, for me, in everything else. I like foam cleansers to wash my face at the sink, like when I'm not in the shower. And even now, knowing what I know, I won't swear that I will never purchase a foaming cleanser again. To combat any dryness, which I didn't experience with either The Body Shop or L'Occitane ones, I use the Jose Maran Argan Oil.

Soooooo to foam or not to foam? What do you think? Another YouTuber that I admire Josh Collier loves Boots Expert Sensitive Gentle Cleansing Wash, and that foams.

Sensitive Gentle Cleansing Wash ingredients: Aqua/Water/Eau (Water), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Glycerin, Sodium Citrate, PEG 120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Phenoxyethanol, Aqua Mineralis (Mineral Water), Methylparaben, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Propylene Glycol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Extract.

If you're an avid YouTube watcher you've probably heard about these products. Both brands blew up on the skincare seen in short order as expensive, but effective. If you're like me you quickly began to wonder: which is better? Short answer: it depends.
