Try This!

I'm not a make up artist. Not interested in becoming one either 'cause if I does shop so for myself I don't know how I would do with a whole kit. As with all things though, practise makes permanent. The more I do those #LipSwatchWeek posts; the more I apply a full face, the more products and techniques I try. These 'Try This!' posts will be quick tips about new things I've incorporated into my routine.

Dewy Skin Sandwich

Highlighters are all the rage right now. De people gone mad. I've gone a bit mad too 'cause I've added so many to my collection in recent months. Now us oily skin folks don't like to look shiney all over so this highlighting thing has to be strategic. Another delicate balance that must be achieved is maintaining that matte effect in the danger zones but not looking like a dead. Well, recently I've become a huge fan of the 'Dewy Skin Sandwich':

  • apply your makeup as normal with your favourite mattifying foundation
  • apply all the powder products in your usual routine EXCEPT highlighter
  • apply setting spray; let dry completely (I usually fan my face to speed up the process)
  • apply your highlighter
  • apply your favourite finishing spray (M.A.C Fix+, Mario Badescu Facial Spray etc.)
p.s. I usually apply mascara as the very last step after my face is totally dry.

Somehow, applying my highlighter after my setting setting spray makes those highlighted areas pop even more; even if I've used the most subtle of powders. Of course, the finishing spray does its job of melding the powder products together and taking away any cakey residue. An additional benefit: the finishing spray would add back the hydration so critical to the skin that the alcohol in the setting spray took away. This technique marries the longevity of matte base products and the glowy youthfulness of radiant, healthy skin. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Sunday Riley Good Genes versus Drunk Elephant T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

If you're an avid YouTube watcher you've probably heard about these products. Both brands blew up on the skincare seen in short order as expensive, but effective. If you're like me you quickly began to wonder: which is better? Short answer: it depends.

Long answer...

I've mentioned Good Genes a few times before on the blog. This 'all-in-one lactic acid treatment' is raved about by the likes of Stephanie Nicole and Caroline Hirons.

From the box: "Deeply exfoliates the dull surface of the skin for clarity, radiance, and younger-looking skin. Visibly brightens the appearance of age spots and discolorations. Instantly plumps the look of fine lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes*

*Clinically tested and proven to significantly improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes. Results obtained via profilometry analysis.

Summer Standouts

It feels strange to talk about beauty products with all that's going on in the Caribbean. Our neighbours are going through some seriously trying times and I implore you to give whatever you can. 🙏

I didn't even realise that this was a running theme. Last year's was especially good since it featured some of my favourite combinations. Like last year, makeup seems to have taken a backseat this Summer.

There's only one item here that surprised me...but let me not get ahead of myself.
Y'all know exfoliators are a must in my skin and body care routine so the Bath & Body Works 'Lavender & Sandalwood' Clay Body Scrub and Coco Shea 'Coconut' Richly Nourishing Body Buff (thanks to the Mistress!) should come as no real shocker. Both smell amazing; again no shocker since regular readers know I'm a firm aromatherapy believer.
