Schmidt's Natural Deodorant

Yessssssssssssss we talmbout deodorant.

Natural deodorant is something I've been interested in ever since I read about the link to aluminum and cancer. "Aluminum-based compounds are used as the active ingredient in antiperspirants. These compounds form a temporary plug within the sweat duct that stops the flow of sweat to the skin's surface. Some research suggests that aluminum-based compounds, which are applied frequently and left on the skin near the breast, may be absorbed by the skin and cause estrogen-like (hormonal) effects (3). Because estrogen has the ability to promote the growth of breast cancer cells, some scientists have suggested that the aluminum-based compounds in antiperspirants may contribute to the development of breast cancer (3)." [1] While most articles will tell you that there's no tangible link I still would like to ease off the antiperspirant since cancer is rampant in my family on both sides. The trouble of course is that we live in Buhbaydus and regular regular it does feel like we right next to the Equator. So what's a girl to do?

Natural deodorants are aluminum-free. Instead, many use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to "absorb wetness". If you're allergic to baking soda you could might as well stop reading now cause Schmidt's is one such brand that uses it.

Schmidt's Natural Deodorants

From their website: "A NEW KIND OF DEODORANT.

Schmidt's started humbly in a Portland, Oregon, kitchen, when founder Jaime Schmidt was pregnant with her son. Jaime had always had a passion for natural body care products and studied their benefits, and she became motivated to make natural products for her family's health. Knowing that natural deodorant had a reputation for being ineffective, Jaime made it her mission to change the way people think about deodorant, refusing to compromise any effectiveness when formulating her deodorant. The investment in research and testing proved to be invaluable when Jaime knew she had developed a product that legitimately worked all day, felt great on the skin, and smelled incredible. After sharing the deodorant with others, they were amazed at their effectiveness, motivating Jaime to introduce Schmidt's Deodorant to local farmer's markets and businesses. Jaime did, and the response was overwhelming. Demand for the product surged as local markets and co-ops began to carry the deodorant and found themselves quickly selling out
Available in four scents and fragrance-free, the products were originally sold in jars. Now there's also stick form. I have three of the scented ones; two potted ones purchased from Pure Source Barbados and the sole stick one given to me by the lovely Francoise. Thanks luv! They retail for $33BDS DP / $26.50BDS DF.

I was very happy to see a stick form released since initially I thought it would be very weird to scoop the product out then apply it with my fingers.

Schmidt's Natural Deodorant 'Lavender + Sage'
Schmidt's Natural Deodorant 'Lavender + Sage'

As the photo above shows a tiny spatula is provided to get the product out. Only a small is required to get the job done.

I purchased 'Ylang-Ylang + Calendula' first but I wasn't wowed by the scent so I went back for 'Lavender + Sage'.

"The clean, herbaceous fragrance of Lavender + Sage is tranquil and soothing. Antioxidant and antiseptic properties complement this top-selling deodorant.

Award winning formula provides all-day odor protection and wetness relief.

• Fast-absorbing. Non-greasy, non-sticky feel.

• Free of aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens & phthalates.

• Plant-based powders protect against wetness without the use of aluminum.

• Certified Vegan & Cruelty-free. Gluten-free.

• Packaged in elegant and sustainable glass jars.

• Made in Portland, OR, USA.

• Eligible for Schmidt's Recycling Club.

• Application: Remove product from jar using enclosed spatula. Warm a small dab between fingers, and apply.

• Ingredients: Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, Salvia sclarea (clary sage) essential oil, Lavandula (lavender) essential oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Humulus lupulus (hop) extract

I love most lavender scents and this one did not disappoint.

On to performance. Now it isn't an antiperspirant so I wasn't expecting sweat blocking results. I found that once I wasn't out in the bludgeoning heat for an extended period of time I didn't have any issues. At the end of the day I did notice a natural musk, if you will, coming through but nothing far from what my usual roll on - Dove - would do. If you sweat profusely or are particularly odorous it might not be enough for you.

I am so thankful to Francoise for allowing me to try the 'Bergamot + Lime' scent cause it was next on my 'To Purchase' list. I guess Schmidt's responded to their customers requests and made their product even easier to apply. I love this scent!

"With its bright citrus scent, Bergamot + Lime is a true pleasure to wear, with essential oils that lend additional disinfectant and skin healing benefits.

The arrangement of the ingredients differ between the potted and stick formulas. The obvious pro to the stick packaging is that you don't have to get your hands dirty to apply the product. The con I have found is since there are more lubricants (oils and higher amount of wax), the product stays moist longer once applied. No putting on a white shirt directly after this soul. Also, its softer nature causes it to easily move around the opening so there's always excess spilling over the packaging. This causes product build up which makes it harder to recap. Not a big deal if you don't mind wiping off the packaging after each use.

I'm planning to continue use of this line on easy going and cooler days. If I can at least reduce my exposure to antiperspirants that's still something.

If you live in a colder climate you might find that your stick deodorant is much stiffer as Missefforlesslychic did:

So have you tried any natural deodorants? Do you think aluminum in antiperspirant could increase the likelihood of cancer? Let us know in the comments.

Sunday Riley Good Genes versus Drunk Elephant T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

If you're an avid YouTube watcher you've probably heard about these products. Both brands blew up on the skincare seen in short order as expensive, but effective. If you're like me you quickly began to wonder: which is better? Short answer: it depends.

Long answer...

I've mentioned Good Genes a few times before on the blog. This 'all-in-one lactic acid treatment' is raved about by the likes of Stephanie Nicole and Caroline Hirons.

From the box: "Deeply exfoliates the dull surface of the skin for clarity, radiance, and younger-looking skin. Visibly brightens the appearance of age spots and discolorations. Instantly plumps the look of fine lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes*

Unlike my Influencers post the persons mentioned below are all local and I know them. If that makes me biased then you should take everything I'm about to say with a grain of salt.

Heidi Bowen of Moden Makeup

Let's get the obvious one out of the way shall we 😉 I've said before how much I've learned watching Heidi conduct her Workshops. Since then she has increased her skillset, restructured her modules and truly focused on knowledge sharing. Every participant departs feeling enlightened; emboldened to try something they once thought was daunting. No one leaves empty handed. This kindda thing speaks to me because I've attended many M.A.C classes and saw the value only in the products I was reimbursed. Not to say, the outing isn't a good time - especially if you go with friends - but some settings leave you more intimidated than excited. #TeamModen affiliations aside, I can see how Heidi has grown as a Beauty Educator. And fuh my one part I know any session booked…
