Beauty Oil Woes

With that title yuh should know what's coming; a comparison. Beauty oils got super hyped last year with brands bringing out their version left and right. A big part of the marketing push was that persons with oily skin shouldn't be afraid of these treatments. Word is, beauty oils can be used by everyone. Mainly as that last layer of moisture to seal in all the goodness you applied prior. Some oils are touted as being multi-purpose. Some are specialty treatments. We've got a lot to discuss so I had to break up this oil collection. Let's start with some travel sizes.

Travel size beauty oils -

Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil is the one I've been using for the longest. It's one of those multi purpose oils that's also great for the hair and cuticles...anywhere really. From their site:

"What is Argan Oil?

Our 100% natural, 100% organic, pure argan oil is harvested and cold pressed from the nut of the argan tree. Argan oil (also known as Moroccan oil) is a multi-tasking miracle moisturizer that's organically grown and naturally free of harmful, synthetic chemicals. As one of the rarest oils in the world, it has earned the nickname, "liquid gold." It's rich in high concentrations of vitamins, minerals and powerful anti-oxidants. Vitamin E and essential fatty acids are argan oil benefits that help hydrate and soften your hair, face, body, nails and everything in between.

Why Argan Oil?

Just over ten years ago, I was on a modeling trip in the south of France and met a beautiful older woman whose skin visibly glowed with health. I guessed that she was around 40 years old—turns out she was 70! Her centuries-old secret? Argan Oil.

It’s been rocking my world ever since.

There isn’t much it can’t do. It’s light enough to use as an everyday moisturizer, yet powerful enough to soothe the symptoms of skin ailments like red, dry and oily skin that may clog pores.

And it’s way more than a pretty face. Our Argan Oil is a world-changer in a bottle—organically grown, then harvested by Berber women who support themselves and their families by selling us their liquid treasure. Health, beauty, and women empowering themselves: that’s the essence of Josie Maran Cosmetics."

Information on how the Founder suggests that the product should be used can be found here. The 15 ml / 0.5 fl. oz bottle can be purchased for $16USD. This size is often offered in value sets. The 50 ml / 1.7 fl. oz. bottle retails for $48USD.

Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil has fast become a cult favourite. The entire line actually. I dunno if it's the pops of neon on their packaging or what. I recently raved about this product, but me using oils to combat dry skin whilst travelling is a reoccurring theme. From their site

Like rehab for your skin, this wonder-working, luxury facial oil, high in critical antioxidants tocopherol (vitamin E), tochotrienol, phenolic compounds and flavinoids, and rich in omegas 6 and 9, helps to moisturize, rejuvenate and nourish skin while restoring a youthful glow. Straight from the “pip” of the marula fruit, our Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil is virtually untouched by any chemical or fragrance, natural or synthetic and remains in its purest form.

Our Virgin Marula Oil is cold-pressed using a patented process of unheated water extraction, ensuring the oil remains nutrient-dense and stays fresher longer. We don't cut, bleach or deodorize, nor do we add scented essential oils, which can act as irritants and disrupt the many benefits of this pure and unrefined oil. Highly absorbent, Virgin Marula Oil delivers advanced defense against environmental stressors and free radicals. Look for a noticeable reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, redness and blotchiness, with a marked improvement in skin's elastic feel. It is naturally anti-microbial and appropriate for all skin types.

Our Virgin Marula Oil is totally pure, which is the way it is used by the African women. So close your eyes and pretend you're sitting under a beautiful Marula tree...your skin will never know the difference! With regular use as part of your complete Drunk Elephant skincare routine, your skin will be balanced and optimized to look and feel it's healthiest.

D.E. is committed to using only clean ingredients that either directly benefit the skin’s health or support the integrity and effectiveness of our formulations. We never take into account an ingredient’s synthetic or natural status, but instead choose based on its safety and bio-compatibility. You won’t find what we call the “suspicious 6” of any kind in our products (1. silicones, 2. chemical screens, 3. sensitizing colorants / perfumes, 4. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) 5. essential oils, 6. drying alcohols), making them appropriate for every skin type. We believe that these 6 ubiquitous ingredients are at the root of almost every skin issue. When formulating the products, we focus on pH and toxicity, always making sure that the actives are at efficacious levels. This is the D.E. difference.

Drunk Elephant suggests you can use this product the same way Josie said you can use hers i.e. practically anywhere. The 30 ml / 1 fl. oz bottle retails for $72USD. 8 ml sizes are often offered in value sets

NUDE ProGenius Rescue Oil was raved about by Stephanie Nicole. Then Sephora stopped carrying the brand and left a lot of people scrambling. From their site:

"An ultra-sheer, skin-saving oil that revives and smoothes skin texture with powerful antioxidant protection. ProGenius Omega Treatment Rescue Oil is all-natural and vegan.

This featherweight formula features bakuchiol, nature’s answer to retinol, without the negative side effects. It helps repair and refine texture for satin, flawless skin. Purifying coleus root and organic rosemary extracts work to clarify the complexion and antioxidant-rich ingredients provide environmental protection, making this a true lifesaver for your skin. Vegan.

After 2 weeks of use:
  • 100% said it absorbs instantly into skin and skin feels smoother*
  • 87.5% said skin is calmed*
After 4 weeks of use:
  • 100% said skin feels revitalized*
  • 96.9% said skin looks clarified and refined*
  • 93.8% said skin looks brighter and healthier, pores look refined, and visible signs of aging are reduced*
  • 93.8% said it is more effective than other facial oils they have used and saw a noticeable difference in their skin*
  • 90.6% said pores look minimized*
  • 84.4% said it helps even skintone*
*Results observed in a consumer panel survey on 32 subjects."

NUDE recommends only using on the face and neck. The 30 ml / 1 oz bottle retails for 58GBP (approx. $75USD). I got this 10 ml / 0.33 fl. oz. bottle, you guessed it, in a value set.

NUDE ProGenius Rescue Oil -

First thing worth mentioning is the ingredients. The Josie Maran and Drunk Elephant products are made of one ingredient a piece while the NUDE one is a concoction.

Josie Maran - 100% Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil*, *Certified Organic Ingredient, **Natural Ingredient.

Drunk Elephant - Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil.

Nude does claim that: "...the fragrance of the product is botanical and all-natural." But if you're an ingredient purist the added fragrance would rule them out.

The prices have already been noted. I've only considered buying the Virgin Marula Oil in the full size but I've got a few products in this category to get through before I buy anything. N.B.: The Argan Oil is the best value for money but I wouldn't recommend this one for oily skin (face*) in our climate. Josie Maran has released a 'Light' version which we will discuss at a later date. *I made the distinction about using on the face because it's perfectly fine for the cuticles, body and hair.

Texture is a big one. Us oily skin folk are, rightfully so, skeptical about this whole beauty oil business. While we understand that adding moisture can essentially 'level out' our sebum production we don't want to look ready for the frying pan straight out the gate. The ProGenius has the thinnest consistency and thereby absorbs the fastest. Also, if you follow their instructions of pressing the product into the skin instead of rubbing, I'm sure that'll assist with the delivery into the skin. The Argan Oil is the most dense; that's probably why it's a big hit with dry skin folk.

I'd recommend keeping all skincare out of direct sunlight. As far as packaging goes, Josie Maran and Drunk Elephant have done well to place their product in dark and opaque bottles respectively. Dropper dispensers are run of the mill for oils. The Drunk Elephant sample actually came with a pump which was surprising. The full sized features the standard pipette though. image

I'll reserve my recommendation until I've reviewed all the oils in my stash but just know for now that I'm going to use up each of these travel sizes.

Sunday Riley Good Genes versus Drunk Elephant T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

If you're an avid YouTube watcher you've probably heard about these products. Both brands blew up on the skincare seen in short order as expensive, but effective. If you're like me you quickly began to wonder: which is better? Short answer: it depends.

Long answer...

I've mentioned Good Genes a few times before on the blog. This 'all-in-one lactic acid treatment' is raved about by the likes of Stephanie Nicole and Caroline Hirons.

From the box: "Deeply exfoliates the dull surface of the skin for clarity, radiance, and younger-looking skin. Visibly brightens the appearance of age spots and discolorations. Instantly plumps the look of fine lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes*

*Clinically tested and proven to significantly improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes. Results obtained via profilometry analysis.

#FlashbackFriday | Beauty in Panama

Panama is most definitely beautiful. It was never a place I intended to visit so let me begin by thanking Innovate Barbados and COPA Airlines for the opportunity. COPA Airlines sponsored Innovate Barbados 2018 and provided three tickets for attendees to any COPA Airlines destination in the Caribbean or Central America. Panama was being promoted as a shopping destination - cause yuh know how Bajans love tuh shop!

If you're new to this blog, when a post starts with 'Beauty at/in...' it's not about the places' landscapes. It's a beauty blog after all; we're all about what cosmetics are available.

Having done no research about Panama, I was shocked to see the variety of brands available there. Panama is home to the largest mall in the Americas: Albrook Mall.

Very popular brands are available in Panama; whether it's via stand alone stores or counters in Cave Shepherd  / JC Penny-esque department stores. They're a lot of pictures ahead to be prepared to s…
