Faves In Five | March 2019

I really ain't do one o dese since May last year?

Man 2018 like it was a rough time regarding blogging. I guess I lost my mojo πŸ˜• Anyhow, here are a few things I've been loving recently.

Tatcha Polished Classic Rice Enzyme Powder

I got a 10 g / 0.35 oz. travel size in some kit or de other. I've heard itsKeerstin rave about these powder cleansers but I wasn't really checking. My mistake. I completely recommend this if you have oily or combination skin. It cleanses and mattifies without making the skin uncomfortably dry. Make sure to follow the instructions and wet your hands first. Trust me, I wasted so much product trying to wet the powder after having it in my palm. Big no no. Would I use type of cleanser exclusively? No; but's only because I like options πŸ˜‰ The full size, 60 grams, retails for $65USD. That's a lot of money but it's also a lot of product.

Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Serum

Another kit find. Absolutely buying this in the next Sephora sale. From Drunk Elephant's site:

"WHAT IT IS:

Like sunshine’s bronzy color, delivered without the damage. D-Bronzi™ is an easy way to get a bronzy glow without the long-term consequences.
WHAT IT IS FORMULATED TO DO:

A chronopeptide that mimics the antioxidant benefits of vitamin D, omega-rich virgin marula and black currant seed oils, along with vitamin F (fatty acids), immediately replenish the delicate balance that supports a healthy barrier function of skin, while a concentrated mix of protective antioxidants boosts skin’s defenses against pollution and environmental stressors…all delivered with a bronzy finish. D-Bronzi’s just-got-back-from somewhere glow flatters every complexion.
WHAT ELSE YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Raw, unrefined cocoa powder adds an infusion of good-for-skin polyphenols, while platinum peptide acetyl tetrapeptide-17 strengthens.

SUGGESTED USAGE:

Add a drop or more of D-Bronzi™ to any Drunk Elephant serum, sunscreen, oil or moisturizer for a gorgeous glow and a potent dose of protective antioxidants and omega fatty acids.

Trunk Tip: May be applied to face, chest, legs or anywhere else you want a touch of bronze.
"

If you are lazy like me and would rather get those extra minutes of sleep rather than apply makeup, this is for us. That is of course, if you don't have a lot of imperfections to cover. Or for those days that you don't care  about covering them. The fact that you are instructed to add it to a moisturizer/oil just means more glow. It cuts down that white cast of mineral sunscreens. Not ready to spend the $36USD on the full size (30 ml)? Get the Out Of Office kit that's $25USD.

Laneige Fresh Calming Toner

Two things I realised last year: Laneige products are priced pretty good and I always have to purchase a toner when I travel. $27USD for 250 ml is nice and it doesn't hurt that the packaging is cute. This will be in a comparison post later.

Christian Dior Dior Addict Lip Glow '006 Berry'

I love coloured lip balms. Should you spend $34USD on one? I don't think I'm the one to ask πŸ˜‚ For the shine, comfort and packaging I think it's something I would repurchase...way down the road.

Cane + Austin Prime & Protect Mattifying Primer

Beauty YouTubers doan sway me like one time but when I was still on-boarding their suggestions, Casey Holmes convinced me to give this a try. She loves the tint, the SPF 50 and of course the mattifying properties. This is no longer listed on Sephora's website but Cane + Austin's site has the 1.5 oz tube for $56USD.

"Product Benefits:
  • Protects against signs of sun damage and photo-aging
  • Blurs imperfections
  • Creates a smooth and even surface for makeup application
  • Provides all day oil control".
I wore this as my final skincare step during my recent Panama trip and while I wouldn't completely agree with the "all day oil control" claim I definitely wasn't as oily at the end of the day. I endorse all other claims.

Special mention:

thisworks super sleep (2 natural pillow sprays in 1)

I've raved about the sleep line from thisworks before. Sadly this iteration of these two sprays is a limited edition product. I don't travel without some kind of thisworks sleep product. This line is available locally from Pure Source.

Sunday Riley Good Genes versus Drunk Elephant T.L.C Framboos Glycolic Night Serum

If you're an avid YouTube watcher you've probably heard about these products. Both brands blew up on the skincare seen in short order as expensive, but effective. If you're like me you quickly began to wonder: which is better? Short answer: it depends.

Long answer...

I've mentioned Good Genes a few times before on the blog. This 'all-in-one lactic acid treatment' is raved about by the likes of Stephanie Nicole and Caroline Hirons.

From the box: "Deeply exfoliates the dull surface of the skin for clarity, radiance, and younger-looking skin. Visibly brightens the appearance of age spots and discolorations. Instantly plumps the look of fine lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes*

*Clinically tested and proven to significantly improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles in 3 minutes. Results obtained via profilometry analysis.

Herbivore Botanicals PM Skincare Routine

Last year I outlined a fairly comprehensive night time routine with a couple of options. As I said then, I mainly listen to my skin and use whatever type of product it seems to be needing. Sometimes laziness or a migraine may keep me from doing any sort of a routine at all 😞 Thankfully, those days are in the minority.

If you're thinking of compiling a skincare routine, I'd like to offer this basic principle: day time - protect; night time - repair. That coupled with staying away from harmful ingredients and you're well on your way. Many brands will try to sell you on using numerous products in their range, claiming they "work best" together. That may be true but I am a skeptic. Once you know how active ingredients work you can use anything from any line. All that said, for the first time in a long time I've been using some products from Herbivore Botancials back-to-back and the routine ain't too shabby.
